Canto custa isto?
How much does this cost?
Usage
The basic way to ask a price while pointing at an item; add "Por favor" to be more polite
Grammar Note
Question words carry no accent (unlike Spanish cuánto). "Custa" is the 3rd person singular of custar
Só estou mirando, grazas
I'm just looking, thank you
Usage
A polite way to tell a shop assistant that you are only browsing
Grammar Note
Progressive = estar + gerund (-ando). Thanks is "Grazas" with no gender split, unlike Portuguese obrigado/a
Teñen un tamaño máis grande?
Do you have a larger size?
Usage
Ask for a larger size of clothing or goods; for a smaller one say "máis pequeno"
Grammar Note
The 3rd person plural "teñen" addresses the shop staff. Only the closing "?" is used, no "¿"
Quedo con este
I'll take this one
Usage
Say it when you have decided what to buy: "I'll take this one"
Grammar Note
"Quedar con" means to keep or take something for oneself, as in "Quedo con este"
Aceptan tarxeta de crédito?
Do you accept credit cards?
Usage
Check before paying whether credit cards are accepted
Grammar Note
Spelled "tarxeta" with x (Spanish tarjeta has j, which Galician lacks). The bare singular means cards in general
Podo probar isto?
May I try it on?
Usage
Ask permission to try on clothes or shoes
Grammar Note
"Poder" + infinitive. Probar means to try on when the object is clothing
Onde están os probadores?
Where are the fitting rooms?
Usage
Ask where the fitting rooms are in a clothes shop
Grammar Note
"Probador" is a masculine noun for a fitting room. Location questions use estar, not ser
Teñen algo máis barato?
Do you have something cheaper?
Usage
Ask for something cheaper when a price is over budget
Grammar Note
"Barato" means low-priced; the opposite is "caro" (máis caro = more expensive)
Pode envolvelo para agasallo?
Could you gift-wrap it?
Usage
A polite request to have a purchase gift-wrapped
Grammar Note
Infinitive + o becomes "envolvelo" (r assimilates to l). Polite requests to vostede use the 3rd person "pode"
Podo devolver isto?
Can I return this?
Usage
Ask whether a purchased item can be returned
Grammar Note
"Devolver" means to give back or return. First person of poder is "podo" (no Spanish ue alternation)
Non preciso recibo
I don't need a receipt
Usage
Decline a receipt at the till; add "grazas" to soften it
Grammar Note
The negation "non" precedes the verb. "Precisar" is transitive and takes no preposition before its object
